Gombe State Floods Devastate Over 2,500 Homes and Farmlands Across 33 Communities
Gombe State has been hit by devastating floods that destroyed no fewer than 2,517 houses and shops across 33 communities, according to the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency. The agency’s Deputy Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr. Ibrahim Nalado, revealed these figures during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Gombe.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Nalado explained that the floods, which occurred between August 12 and August 22, severely affected communities in Dukku, Funakaye, and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs). The heavy downpours led to extensive damage, leaving many residents displaced and their properties destroyed.
“In Dukku LGA, 10 communities were affected, while Funakaye LGA saw damage in 20 communities, and Billiri LGA had three affected communities,” Nalado detailed. The flooding primarily damaged homes, though a few farmlands also suffered significant losses.
While there were no fatalities, the floods injured two children in Dukku and swept away seven animals. The most severe agricultural impact was observed in the Hina community in Yamaltu/Deba LGA, where approximately 1,000 hectares of rice, maize, sorghum, and millet farmlands were submerged.
The deputy director described the situation as “huge and devastating,” noting that farmers were on the brink of harvest when the floods struck. The unexpected natural disaster has caused considerable anxiety among the farming communities, who are now grappling with the loss of their crops.
In response to the crisis, Nalado’s team visited the affected areas on Friday, August 30, to assess the level of damage. The data on the number of farmers affected is currently being compiled, with reports set to be forwarded to the state government and other relevant agencies.
Nalado emphasized that addressing the damage to farmlands in Hina will require a coordinated effort from both the state and federal governments. He called on the North East Development Commission and the National Emergency Management Agency to support Gombe State in this recovery effort.
