NANS to Launch Nationwide Protest Against Alleged Food Diversion by NEMA
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans for a significant protest within the next 72 hours, targeting the alleged fraudulent diversion of food commodities by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). This protest aims to raise awareness about the reported misappropriation of 42,000 metric tons of food grains intended for Nigeria’s poorest and most vulnerable citizens.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Wednesday, signed by Deputy Senate President Huzaifa Sabo Usman, NANS emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling for nationwide attention to the alleged misconduct. According to Usman, NANS submitted a Freedom of Information request to NEMA on August 14, 2024, titled “Alleged Diversion of 42,000 Metric Tons of Grains.” Despite their efforts, NANS has not received a satisfactory explanation regarding the missing food supplies.
“Investigative reports, along with corroborations from various state governors, indicate that these supplies did not reach their intended recipients,” Usman stated. He cited a letter from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, dated June 27, 2024, which confirmed that the food grains were released to NEMA following a directive from the President.
Evidence suggests that NEMA staff, in collusion with corrupt officials from various state governments, have diverted these essential food supplies for personal gain, depriving many Nigerians of necessary nutrition. Usman pointed out that the scale of this diversion indicates deep-seated corruption within NEMA, implicating the agency’s Director General and her management team.
“This scandal mirrors previous cases of mismanagement that led to significant civil unrest, including the nationwide End Bad Governance protests,” Usman added. In light of these serious allegations, NANS demands an immediate and transparent accounting of how the 42,000 metric tons of food grains were distributed.
Issuing a 72-hour ultimatum to NEMA, Usman declared, “If NEMA fails to provide a satisfactory response within 72 working hours, NANS will proceed with a massive protest at the NEMA headquarters to hold those responsible accountable.”
