Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has been appointed as the patron of the Ecumenical Synod of Bishops, Archbishops, and Senior Clergy Inc. (ESBAASC). This prestigious appointment was announced during the international conference held from August 22–25 at Emmanuel Park, RCCG Redemption Camp.

Promoting Religious Tolerance

The conference, themed “Religious Tolerance in Nigeria and Across the Nations of the World,” focused on understanding religious tolerance, its challenges, and strategies for fostering it. The gathering brought together leaders from various Christian denominations, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in addressing mutual concerns.

Archbishop Prof. Kehinde Olubunmi, the International Prelate and Chief Host, nominated Pastor Adeboye as the Patron and Archbishop Prof. Mary Ajisafe as Matron of ESBAASC. The nominations were met with unanimous approval and a standing ovation, underscoring the high regard in which these leaders are held.

Adeboye’s Reflections on Nigeria’s Religious Harmony

Represented by Pastor Joseph Obayemi, RCCG National Overseer Emeritus, Adeboye expressed deep concern about the current state of religious harmony in Nigeria. He fondly recalled a time when Nigerians of different faiths—Christians, Muslims, and traditional worshippers—coexisted peacefully. Adeboye highlighted that religious tolerance promotes mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, and unity among diverse cultures, which are crucial for maintaining national identity and harmony.

He also pointed out that much of the religious and sectarian violence in Nigeria is politically motivated, often manipulated by those seeking to exploit economic and social divisions. Adeboye urged the conference participants to be advocates for religious tolerance, emphasizing that true believers should prioritize love and the preservation of life over violence.

Calls for Global Cooperation

Adeboye stressed the importance of international cooperation in promoting religious tolerance. He called on global organizations, governments, and civil societies to work together to create an environment where freedom of religion and diverse beliefs can thrive.

Insights from Other Religious Leaders

The conference featured contributions from other religious leaders, including Imam Abdul-Azeez Onike, a Muslim cleric and researcher. Onike warned that Nigeria cannot afford the devastation of a religious war and highlighted the importance of learning from historical tragedies like the Holocaust and 9/11.

Apostle A.B. Otaru, Chairman of Ogun State PFN/CPFN, emphasized that religious tolerance stems from a deep understanding of humanity in relation to God. He argued that genuine love for God among nations, including Nigeria, would lead to peace, unity, and happiness.

Gambian Delegate’s Perspective

Bishop Dr. Samuel Akinola, representing the Gambian delegation, shared insights from Gambia’s experience in overthrowing the unpopular government of Yahya Jammeh. He credited the successful political change to the unity between Christians and the Muslim majority, urging Nigeria to embrace religious tolerance genuinely.

Special Committee Established By NASS To Investigate Unremitted N4 Trillion Revenue

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance has established a special panel to investigate a revenue shortfall exceeding N4 trillion, attributed to unchecked waivers granted by government agencies.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This decision follows a motion raised by Senator Adamu Aliero during a hearing to assess the revenue profiles of ministries, departments, agencies, and government-owned enterprises in preparation for the 2025 budget.

The goal of the hearing was to enable the Senate and House of Representatives committees to generate accurate and realistic revenue projections for 2025.

The newly formed committee will be co-chaired by Senator Sani Musa and Hon. James Faleke.

Aliero, in presenting the motion, stated, “The issue of waivers has led to a significant gap between expected revenue and actual collections. Our records show that over N5.9 trillion should have been deposited into the consolidated revenue fund, but only N1.9 trillion has been received. This calls for the establishment of a special committee to investigate this critical issue.”

He emphasized, “We cannot allow revenue agencies to spend funds without the National Assembly’s oversight. If waivers are granted, it is crucial to determine who authorized them. A N4 trillion shortfall is a substantial amount, and our findings indicate that over N4.9 trillion has not been remitted. We need a dedicated committee to investigate the unremitted funds.”

Oyo Security Agencies Clamp Down On Actions Promoting Religious Hate

The Federal Government is investigating increasing reports of religious activities that may incite tension in Nigeria’s South-West region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to sources within the administration, concerns have grown over allegations linking certain groups and individuals to extremist actions that threaten to disrupt the region’s historically peaceful religious coexistence.

Recent incidents in Oyo State have heightened these fears, with suspicions that extremist ideologies may be seeping into the South-West. Security agencies have been directed to preempt and neutralize any such activities before they escalate.

Reports indicate that some extremists may be using routes through areas like Old Oyo National Park and Kamoko Forest, which spans Kaduna, Niger, and Kwara states, as entry points to the region. Additionally, some groups are allegedly spreading division by promoting religious intolerance.

In Oyo Town, security operatives questioned members of a pro-Sharia group that announced plans to establish a Sharia Court. The group later clarified that their aim was to form a Sharia Panel focused on civil matters such as marriage and inheritance, while acknowledging the constitutional judiciary’s supreme authority.

Investigations also led to the arrest of one John Olanrewaju Ifagbemi, accused of desecrating the Quran. Ifagbemi allegedly posted inflammatory content on social media targeting the Quran and hinted at similar plans involving the Holy Bible, intending to promote his version of traditional religion.

While some social media users claimed his arrest infringed on his religious freedom, officials clarified that the arrest was based on his potential to incite unrest rather than any bias against secularism.
