The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has expressed deep concern over the severe and unjust treatment of Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions where they face relentless persecution.
Speaking virtually on Friday during the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria Eko Subordinate Council in Lagos, Bishop Kukah highlighted the disturbing trend of violence against Christians in Northern Nigeria. He pointed out the alarming reality that Christians in this part of the country are often targeted without fear of consequences for the perpetrators.
“If you look at our country—Nigeria, the issue is that, in Northern Nigeria, Christians constitute some of the groups that you can kill without consequences,” Bishop Kukah stated. “You can ask yourself; has anybody ever been charged for burning churches or for destroying Christian properties?”
He lamented that despite the widespread atrocities committed against Christians, those responsible are rarely, if ever, brought to justice. The Bishop cited various incidents, including the public slaughter of a pastor in Adamawa, the murder of priests in Benue, and the killings of clergy in Kaduna, as clear examples of the unchecked violence faced by Christians in the region.
“It seems as if killing Christians is the only thing the world can do without consequences,” he said, urging Christians across Nigeria to recognize that attacks on any church, regardless of location, should be a concern for all. “What happens to the church in Ikwerre, what happens to the church in Sokoto, what happens to the church in Onitsha, what happens to the church everywhere in this country should affect us.”
Bishop Kukah further criticized the enduring “caliphate mentality” in Northern Nigeria, where Christianity is often merely tolerated, and Christians are denied basic rights such as land to build churches. He emphasized that this systemic discrimination is not just a local issue but a global challenge, with similar problems occurring in places like Kenya.
Despite these challenges, Bishop Kukah reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of Christians to preach the gospel, regardless of the circumstances. “We must preach the gospel, welcome or unwelcome,” he declared. “Preaching the gospel has no political and ethnic boundaries. It is not about friendship.”
Bishop Kukah also addressed the concept of martyrdom, not only in terms of physical death but also as a daily challenge for Christians to uphold their faith in a morally broken society. “Martyrdom is not just about being killed. In the end, you are killed for speaking the truth,” he said, reflecting on the constant threats he has faced throughout his ministry.
The Bishop shared personal experiences of loss and danger, including the recent kidnapping of his seminarian and priest in Sokoto. Despite these hardships, he remains undeterred in his mission, drawing strength from his faith and the belief that these trials only serve to inspire further commitment to the gospel.

This decision follows a motion raised by Senator Adamu Aliero during a hearing to assess the revenue profiles of ministries, departments, agencies, and government-owned enterprises in preparation for the 2025 budget.
The goal of the hearing was to enable the Senate and House of Representatives committees to generate accurate and realistic revenue projections for 2025.
The newly formed committee will be co-chaired by Senator Sani Musa and Hon. James Faleke.
Aliero, in presenting the motion, stated, “The issue of waivers has led to a significant gap between expected revenue and actual collections. Our records show that over N5.9 trillion should have been deposited into the consolidated revenue fund, but only N1.9 trillion has been received. This calls for the establishment of a special committee to investigate this critical issue.”
He emphasized, “We cannot allow revenue agencies to spend funds without the National Assembly’s oversight. If waivers are granted, it is crucial to determine who authorized them. A N4 trillion shortfall is a substantial amount, and our findings indicate that over N4.9 trillion has not been remitted. We need a dedicated committee to investigate the unremitted funds.”

A Magistrate Court in Wuse, Abuja, has ordered the detention of Enenche Enenche, Alexander Enenche, and Pastor Abraham Daniel at Keffi Prison, Nasarawa State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Naija News reports that Enenche Enenche and Alexander Enenche are siblings of Pastor Paul Enenche, the Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Church, while Pastor Abraham Daniel is a former minister at the church.
The trio was transferred to the Keffi Custodial Centre on Monday evening after the Nigerian Police Force obtained a remand order from the Wuse Zone 6 Magistrate Court.
Sources reveal that the individuals were initially arrested on January 7, 2025, for allegations of cyberbullying and defamation against Pastor Paul Enenche. They were released on January 8, following an agreement to resolve the matter amicably, which included a directive for Alex Enenche and Pastor Daniel to report to the Force Intelligence Department (FID) on specific dates.
However, after reporting to the FID on January 10 and January 13, both Alexander and Abraham Daniel were detained. On Monday evening, the police secured a remand order, leading to their transfer to Keffi Prison.
An insider stated, “The police presented a remand order from the Wuse Zone 6 Magistrate Court for their detention. Details about the magistrate and the remand duration remain unclear.”

According to sources within the administration, concerns have grown over allegations linking certain groups and individuals to extremist actions that threaten to disrupt the region’s historically peaceful religious coexistence.
Recent incidents in Oyo State have heightened these fears, with suspicions that extremist ideologies may be seeping into the South-West. Security agencies have been directed to preempt and neutralize any such activities before they escalate.
Reports indicate that some extremists may be using routes through areas like Old Oyo National Park and Kamoko Forest, which spans Kaduna, Niger, and Kwara states, as entry points to the region. Additionally, some groups are allegedly spreading division by promoting religious intolerance.
In Oyo Town, security operatives questioned members of a pro-Sharia group that announced plans to establish a Sharia Court. The group later clarified that their aim was to form a Sharia Panel focused on civil matters such as marriage and inheritance, while acknowledging the constitutional judiciary’s supreme authority.
Investigations also led to the arrest of one John Olanrewaju Ifagbemi, accused of desecrating the Quran. Ifagbemi allegedly posted inflammatory content on social media targeting the Quran and hinted at similar plans involving the Holy Bible, intending to promote his version of traditional religion.
While some social media users claimed his arrest infringed on his religious freedom, officials clarified that the arrest was based on his potential to incite unrest rather than any bias against secularism.
