Harassment of Journalist by Nigerian Security Raises Concerns Over Press Freedom
Harassment of Journalist by Nigerian Security Raises Concerns Over Press Freedom....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Conversation Africa, a prominent online news platform based in South Africa, has strongly condemned the harassment of its West Africa editor and investigative journalist, Adejuwon Soyinka, by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS). This incident raises serious concerns about the state of press freedom and academic integrity in Nigeria.
On Sunday, Soyinka was detained for six hours upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammad Airport in Lagos after a flight from the United Kingdom. During his questioning, DSS officials informed Soyinka that his name had been placed on a watchlist by an unnamed state security agency. However, they failed to provide any clear reasons for this action, which has sparked outrage and worry within journalistic circles.
Following his release, Soyinka’s passport was withheld by the DSS, pending confirmation that the agency responsible for placing him on the watchlist no longer had an interest in him. His situation only improved after the intervention of the International Press Institute, which called for his immediate release and underscored the importance of safeguarding journalists’ rights.
In a statement released on Sunday, The Conversation Africa’s management highlighted the negative implications of Soyinka’s harassment for journalism and academia in Nigeria. They emphasized that both journalists and scholars should have the freedom to disseminate facts, regardless of how inconvenient those facts may be for those in power. The statement read, “Soyinka’s harassment will have a chilling effect, not only on journalism but on the academy, too. Both media and academic freedoms, which are mutually beneficial, are key pillars of a free and democratic society.”
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Nigeria, where press freedom is increasingly under threat. As calls for accountability and transparency grow louder, it is crucial to support and protect the rights of journalists like Adejuwon Soyinka, who play an essential role in upholding democracy and informing the public.
