As the gubernatorial election in Edo State draws near, the Zone Five Headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force has intensified its efforts to curb illegal arms activities in the region. In a significant operation, police operatives successfully arrested two suspected gunrunners and seized a substantial cache of illegal firearms.
Arrest and Seizure Details
In a statement released by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tijani Momoh, on Saturday, it was revealed that the operation was conducted under the directive of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for the Edo and Delta zone, Arungwa Nwazue. The AIG had ordered a thorough mop-up of illegal arms within his jurisdiction in preparation for the upcoming election.
Acting on credible intelligence, the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by ASP Mohammed Usman, raided the Ileh community in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State at approximately 05:00hrs on Friday. During the raid, the squad apprehended two suspects involved in the illicit trade of firearms.
Weapons Recovered
The operation led to the recovery of 30 locally fabricated guns, including 23 single-barrel and seven double-barrel guns, alongside one English-made double-barrel gun. Additionally, 13 live cartridges, a giant toolbox, and a drill machine used in the production of these illegal firearms were confiscated.
Implications and Ongoing Investigation
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects were engaged in the sale and rental of these firearms to criminals, including kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists. These illegal weapons have been instrumental in various criminal activities, terrorizing the people of Edo State and its neighboring areas.
The AIG has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the case, with a promise that the suspects will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Call for Vigilance
DSP Momoh urged all law-abiding citizens in Edo and Delta States to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station. This proactive measure is crucial as the region prepares for the upcoming gubernatorial election, ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

VIOLENCE MUST END! ALGON Takes Radical Step To Restore Peace By Banning Transport Unions Across Osun!.
The Osun State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has suspended the operations of all transport unions within public motor parks across the state. This measure was taken in response to a series of violent clashes between rival groups, which the association deemed necessary to maintain public order and protect residents.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Rationale for Suspension: The action follows repeated violent incidents involving factional disputes within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), which resulted in the death of a toddler and the shooting of an elderly man.
-
Safety Concerns: ALGON Vice Chairman, Lanre Balogun, noted that public motor parks had increasingly become unsafe for commuters and operators, turning into hideouts for criminals.
-
Immediate Directive: Effective immediately, all transport unions—including motorcycle and tricycle operators—are prohibited from activities in public motor parks across the state’s 30 local government areas and the Ife East Area Office in Modakeke.
-
Security Measures: ALGON has requested that security agencies take control of these facilities to restore peace and track down individuals involved in the violence, specifically calling for the arrest of NURTW factional leader Nurudeen Alowonle.
-
Legal Basis: Balogun explained that the decision is supported by the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants local governments the authority to regulate motor parks and maintain public order. He emphasized that local government chairmen would not allow facilities under their control to become security threats, even if other authorities prioritize political considerations over safety.
The suspension will remain in effect until order is restored and public safety is ensured within the state’s transport sector.
