ADO-EKITI, Nigeria (Sept. 20, 2025) — More than 300 persons with disabilities in Ekiti State have benefitted from a major support and empowerment program facilitated by federal lawmaker Akin Rotimi.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Rotimi, who represents Oye/Ikole Ekiti Federal Constituency and chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs, launched the initiative on Friday in Ado-Ekiti. The program included the official flag-off of the Prosthetic Limb Support Project and an empowerment scheme designed to promote economic independence.

At the event, 131 beneficiaries who had undergone screening received prosthetic limbs tailored to their needs. In addition, each of them was given a ₦100,000 grant to support entrepreneurship and small business ventures. Later in the day, another 200 beneficiaries in Oye Local Government Area also received assistance.

“Today is a day of hope and dignity,” Rotimi said. “After months of planning and preparation, we are here to restore mobility, confidence and opportunity to many of our brothers and sisters in Ekiti. This intervention goes beyond mobility by providing the means to build sustainable livelihoods and more fulfilling lives.”

The lawmaker praised the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for prioritizing disability inclusion. He noted that new state buildings now include ramps for accessibility and that more persons with disabilities have been employed in government than ever before.

“This government has been very intentional about disability access,” Rotimi said. “Its policies and programs ensure that no one is left behind in development.”

The wife of the governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, also attended the event and commended Rotimi for his effort. She said the program reflects compassion and inclusivity.

“This initiative goes beyond fitting limbs,” the first lady said. “It is about restoring dignity, rekindling dreams, and reminding us all that every life truly matters. The administration remains committed to creating an inclusive environment where persons with disabilities are supported to thrive.”

Rotimi has a record of supporting disability advocacy. In 2024, he appointed about 30 persons with disabilities as aides in his federal constituency to serve as contact persons. Their role was to push for the rights of the disabled community, strengthen representation and improve participation in governance.

The lawmaker said Friday’s intervention would continue in phases to ensure more beneficiaries are reached across Ekiti State.

The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. The officers asserted that they had seized control of the government.

The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.

Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
