President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s commitment to justice during the public presentation of the autobiography of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the recently retired Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The event, held on Thursday, served as a platform for Tinubu to address the judiciary’s critical role in society and to encourage resilience against negativity.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu urged judicial members to stay true to their constitutional mandate. He noted that justice should not be viewed through the lens of personal gain, stating, “I urge the Nigerian judiciary to live up to its constitutional mandate and ignore those who never see anything good in the judiciary unless the pendulum of justice swings in their favour.”
Acknowledging the judiciary’s contributions, Tinubu pointed out that significant rulings, such as the recent decision that alleviated financial constraints on local government councils, are vital for societal development. He praised Justice Ariwoola’s reforms, which enhanced the administration of justice, including improved salaries for judicial officers.
The President lauded Ariwoola’s dedication to justice, highlighting his successful career and commitment to fairness. “His commitment to the ideals of a just and fair society can also not be overemphasised,” Tinubu remarked.
Former military Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who chaired the event, also called on judges to ensure equitable justice for all, regardless of background. He celebrated Justice Ariwoola’s achievements during his two-year tenure as CJN and emphasized the importance of the title of Ariwoola’s autobiography, “Judging with Justice.”
Abubakar encouraged all Nigerians to adopt the principle of justice in their daily lives, stating, “It is a question that should be the guiding principle for all of us, whatever our professional calling is.” He emphasized that prioritizing justice fosters patriotism, upholds the rule of law, and combats corruption.
Justice Benedict Kanyip, President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, reviewed Ariwoola’s autobiography, describing it as an essential read for everyone. The incoming CJN, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, praised Ariwoola as a disciplined and forthright leader, congratulating him on his accomplishments.
Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, also acknowledged Ariwoola’s exemplary service, stating, “You have actually made us proud. During your tenure, we experienced peace and smooth transition.” The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Justices of the Supreme Court, politicians, and other prominent figures, reflecting the widespread recognition of Ariwoola’s contributions to the judiciary.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has adjusted its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), lowering it from ₦1,275 to ₦1,250 per litre, marking a two per cent reduction. This price shift is attributed to a decline in international crude oil prices, which serve as the refinery’s primary feedstock. An official from the refinery noted that such adjustments are expected in a deregulated market and emphasized that the company will continue to calibrate prices based on evolving market conditions. Despite this move, current retail prices at many filling stations across Nigeria remain above ₦1,350 per litre, with costs varying by location and marketer.Beyond pricing, the refinery has been credited as a key driver of Nigeria’s improving economic outlook. S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded the country’s long-term foreign- and local-currency sovereign credit ratings from “B-” to “B,” citing factors such as stronger economic growth, increased oil production, and improved external balances. A political war of words has erupted between former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The friction began when Kwankwaso, speaking at his Kano residence, insisted that prominent politicians—including Ganduje—owe their political rise to his mentorship and cannot deny their past loyalty to him. Ganduje, currently performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, responded through his chief of staff, Muhammad Garba, by asserting that Kwankwaso was actually his own protégé. Ganduje highlighted his role in Kwankwaso’s early career, including his support during Kwankwaso’s rise to the House of Representatives and his decision to step down as a gubernatorial candidate in 1998 to serve as Kwankwaso’s deputy.
