A heartbreaking incident has unfolded in Ilorin, Kwara State, where a 21-year-old student, Mojisola Awesu, from the Kwara State College of Health Technology, was found dead at a refuse dump. Awesu’s death has shocked the community, especially as it was reported that she was contracted by a friend to act as a girlfriend for another university student at a party for the sum of N15,000.

The grim discovery was made on August 12, 2024, when local laborers stumbled upon Awesu’s body at a refuse dump in the Aleniboro area. The Kwara Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement to PUNCH Online. Following the report from community residents, police operatives swiftly arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and later identified it as Mojisola Awesu before transferring it to a morgue.

On August 13, the situation escalated when Miss Blessing, Awesu’s roommate, reported her missing. Awesu had left home to attend a party organized by students from two private universities in the area. DSP Ejire-Adeyemi explained that Awesu had received a phone call from her acquaintance, Miss Timileyin, on August 9. Timileyin invited Awesu to an event at a hotel, introducing her to Mr. Adebayo Happiness, a student at Summit University, who allegedly paid her to pose as his girlfriend.

Upon arriving in Ilorin, Awesu expressed discomfort to her roommate about the hotel where she was staying, noting that there was no party taking place as promised. After this communication, her phone became unreachable, and attempts by her roommate to contact her were unsuccessful.

Following these developments, the Kwara State Police Command has taken decisive action by arresting several suspects connected to the case. The investigation has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further analysis. DSP Ejire-Adeyemi assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding Awesu’s tragic death.

The community is left in shock and mourning, calling attention to the need for increased safety measures for students and young people attending social events. As investigations continue, many are hoping for justice for Mojisola Awesu and answers regarding the events that led to her untimely death.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
