During a meeting with a delegation of Islamic leaders led by Sheikh Bala Lau at the State House on Thursday, Tinubu highlighted the recent introduction of the student loan scheme, the increase of the minimum wage to N70,000, and the launch of the consumer credit initiative as significant steps taken by his administration.
Tinubu urged the organizers of the protest to avoid turning Nigeria into a situation similar to that of Sudan.
The President emphasized that his administration is working to enhance social welfare programs to benefit vulnerable Nigerians at the grassroots level.
He stated, “We are restructuring the social welfare program to ensure it reaches every ward, the closest level to our people. We aim to reconnect with the wards to provide allowances to the poor and vulnerable.”
Tinubu also elaborated on the new initiatives: “The student loan scheme will cover school fees and provide financial support for education. The consumer credit initiative will help citizens purchase cars and homes with flexible repayment options. Additionally, we have more than doubled the minimum wage.”
According to DAILY POST, the Nigerian National Assembly approved the new Minimum Wage Act on Wednesday, which sets the minimum wage at N70,000, following agreements between Tinubu and Nigerian workers.
Last week, the federal government began disbursing funds to 110,000 beneficiaries of the N35 billion student loan scheme. This follows the April approval by the Tinubu administration of a N100 billion consumer credit scheme for Nigerians.
