The United Kingdom has made a significant contribution to the Nigerian Armed Forces by donating a counter-insurgency (COIN) training facility, enhancing Nigeria’s military capabilities. This facility, located in Ogun State, was officially handed over in a ceremony attended by high-ranking military officials from both nations.

The UK Ministry of Defence financed the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, which was built by a dedicated team of Royal Engineers from the British Army in collaboration with Nigerian Army Engineers. The training centre aims to improve the realism of military exercises, equipping Nigerian soldiers with the necessary skills to tackle the challenges of modern warfare and future deployments.

During the ceremony, Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter emphasized the long-standing security relationship between the UK and Nigeria. He stated, “The UK has deep interests in Nigeria’s development, security, and stability. We enjoy a long-standing security and defence relationship, underpinned by a shared desire to support regional and international peace and security.”

Baxter highlighted the UK’s commitment to addressing the root causes of insurgency and insecurity in Nigeria. He noted that the collaboration focuses on building capacity, modernizing the military, and transforming the armed forces to better handle security challenges.

The UK government continues to provide substantial security and development assistance to Nigeria. This includes not only training facilities but also equipment and capacity-building support. Baxter reiterated, “The British Government will continue to work with Nigeria to respond to the drivers of conflict. All these engagements will lead to better security, stability, and enhanced growth partnerships for the good of both our countries.”

Furthermore, Baxter paid tribute to the sacrifices made by Nigerian soldiers in their pursuit of peace and stability in the region, reaffirming the UK’s dedication to supporting Nigeria in its fight against insurgency.

The newly established COIN training facility is poised to play a crucial role in preparing Nigerian troops for counter-insurgency operations. This training will bolster their ability to respond effectively to security threats across the region, ultimately contributing to greater national and regional stability.
