Organizers have called for participants to gather at state government residences nationwide and at the National Assembly complex in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to voice their grievances over the prevailing difficulties in Nigeria. However, the President of the National Association of Lagos State Students (NULASS), Alimi Lekan-Idris, has announced that Lagos students will not be participating in the protest.
Addressing journalists during a press conference at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital College of Medicine in Ikeja, Alimi urged Nigerian youths to embrace dialogue as a means to achieve their goals. “It is crucial that we remember the importance of peace and stability and use dialogue to achieve our collective goals. Given the significant contributions and progress we have witnessed, we wish to state that we are not in support of any protest against the government of Lagos State,” Alimi stated.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has scheduled an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning to address the planned nationwide protest. This follows President Bola Tinubu’s plea to the organizers to delay the protests and allow his administration more time to implement people-oriented programs. The meeting will be attended by key government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and several Special Advisers to the President. The session comes amid widespread calls for protests over the rising cost of living and economic hardship, which have been attributed to the removal of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, and other economic reforms implemented by the Tinubu administration.
