The Ebonyi State Government has initiated the demolition of shops and residential buildings in the Ogoja Road area of the Abakiliki metropolis to make way for the construction of a flyover aimed at alleviating traffic congestion at the Vanco junction.
During a visit to the affected areas on Thursday afternoon, DAILY POST observed ongoing demolition work on both sides of the road.
However, this action has sparked outcry from impacted traders and landlords.
Several affected traders expressed their dismay, stating that they received no prior notice before the demolition commenced.
Okechukwu Orji and Madam Alice Nworie, two affected traders, lamented the sudden demolition of their shops without any warning, leaving them in a difficult situation without a place to store their goods. They also noted that they had not received any compensation from the government.
In response to inquiries, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works, Stanley Lebechi Mbam, clarified to DAILY POST that the demolition was not targeted at any individual but rather aimed at enhancing the city’s aesthetics and reducing congestion.
He mentioned that those affected were instructed to compile their names and submit the necessary documents to the state government for further action.
