The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has made a public call for the immediate-past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to cooperate with ongoing investigations and present himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning regarding alleged corrupt practices during his tenure.

This appeal comes in the midst of escalating drama surrounding attempts to apprehend Bello for arraignment, which was scheduled for Thursday.

Recent efforts by the EFCC to detain the former governor have been met with resistance, leading to widespread public and media attention.

In a statement personally signed by the AGF, Fagbemi expressed concern over the actions of the current Kogi Governor, Ahmed Ododo, who allegedly utilized his immunity to obstruct Bello’s arrest on Wednesday.

Fagbemi labeled such interventions as “disquieting” and counterproductive to the principles of justice and transparency.

He emphasized that the EFCC has the legal authority to invite any Nigerian citizen for questioning and affirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens.

In the terse statement, Fagbemi stated, “The bizarre drama confronting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the course of its efforts to perform its statutory duty has come to my notice (Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice) as a matter of very grave concern.”

He reiterated that institutions of the state should be allowed to function effectively and efficiently, and urged individuals who have been invited by the EFCC or any other agency to honor such invitations instead of resorting to self-help or escapism.

Fagbemi’s statement underscores the importance of cooperation with law enforcement agencies and adherence to the rule of law in resolving legal matters.
