Ebonyi State Government Denies Borrowing N111.24bn From World Bank And IMF....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Ebonyi State Government has refuted claims that it borrowed N111.24 billion from domestic and foreign financiers within its first six months in office. Dr. Leonard Uguru, the Commissioner for Finance, clarified that Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration has not engaged in borrowing from either internal or foreign creditors since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

Uguru’s response comes in light of a report by the Debt Management Office (DMO), which indicated that Ebonyi State, under Nwifuru’s leadership, was among 17 states that secured a loan of $125.1 million (equivalent to N111.24 billion) from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

According to the report, Ebonyi State’s external debt stands at $37.54 million.

The commissioner emphasized that Ebonyi remains the least indebted state in both domestic and foreign debt categories within the South East region. He acknowledged a pre-existing debt of $150 million from the Africa Development Bank and Islamic Bank, inherited from the previous administration for the reconstruction of Ring Road. However, he justified this debt, citing the road’s significance in connecting various local government areas.

Uguru reiterated the state government’s commitment to human capacity development, with plans underway for the second phase of a one billion naira empowerment program benefiting 500 hawkers. He encouraged investors to leverage the peaceful environment and business-friendly policies introduced by Governor Nwifuru’s All Progressives Congress administration for investment opportunities in the state.
