Amidst mounting economic challenges, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have tabled a fresh demand for a minimum wage of N615,000 for workers across the nation.
An insider within the organized labour circles, who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the issue, disclosed to Sunday that the proposed monthly wage of N615,000 resulted from extensive consultations by the NLC and TUC.
Although the proposed wage stands at N615,000, there’s speculation that it might see further increments, particularly in light of recent hikes in electricity tariffs.
According to the insider, “We (NLC and TUC) have presented our figures to the government (regarding the minimum wage), and it stands at N615,000. This is the collective stance of the NLC and TUC on the matter, which has been communicated to the government.”
The establishment of a new wage scale follows the inauguration of a 37-member panel by President Bola Tinubu, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, on January 30.
Comprising representatives from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organized labour, the panel was tasked with recommending a new national minimum wage.
However, amid mounting pressure and negotiations, the May 1 deadline for the new wage’s implementation remains uncertain. Despite this, labour leaders remain resolute in pushing for a significant increase, citing recent changes in economic dynamics, particularly the removal of electricity tariff subsidies.
The proposed new tariff structure, which came into effect before the conclusion of the minimum wage negotiations, presents an opportunity for labour to leverage in their discussions with the government.
With the complexity of economic challenges facing the nation, including inflationary pressures and varying state economic capacities, achieving consensus on a revised minimum wage poses significant hurdles.
While economists express divergent views on the feasibility and implications of the proposed wage, the outcome of negotiations remains uncertain, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that considers both economic realities and workers’ welfare.

According to Alamu, the military offensive became so severe that the captives momentarily feared the air strikes more than their abductors. This intense military activity also enraged the kidnappers, who had previously raised hopes among the hostages by claiming Governor Seyi Makinde had given assurances of their release before the end of the week.
Tensions peaked when a gang commander summoned Alamu, blaming the government’s actions for frustrating the group and threatening to kill a captive. In a desperate plea, Alamu begged the commander not to harm anyone else, reminding him of the two men from their group who had already been killed. The commander eventually calmed down and asked Alamu how the stalemate could be resolved, prompting her to urge him to make demands that the victims’ families could realistically meet.
The captives faced another terrifying moment when they heard sounds of digging at night, fearing the abductors were preparing graves. However, the situation shifted unexpectedly when the gang ordered them to move camp, threatening to kill the children if they cried out for food. Throughout the ordeal, Alamu’s concerns extended beyond her own safety to the health of her husband and the possibility of not finding him at home. She expressed profound gratitude to God for surviving the 56 days and reuniting with her family.
To help public servants collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the upcoming governorship election, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Tuesday, July 28, 2026, a work-free day.
