The Niger State Police Command has affirmed the apprehension of six individuals suspected to be involved in youth unrest that resulted in the demise of two individuals in Maitunbi community, Minna, the capital city of the state.
According to reports gathered by DAILY POST, the incident transpired on Friday evening at an illicit mining site in Maitumbi, situated along the axis of the Julius Berger Quarry site, where hoodlums engaged in a confrontation wielding dangerous weapons.
The casualties were reported to be a seven-year-old child and a 20-year-old, whose father passed away in March.
Eyewitnesses recounted to DAILY POST that the youth congregated in significant numbers under the pretext of Sallah celebrations and unleashed havoc on the community on Friday evening and Saturday.
Many of the troublemakers, purportedly under the influence of substances, brandished knives and daggers, instigating clashes that resulted in the fatalities of two individuals.
The agitated youths further assaulted residents in the vicinity, robbing them of valuables such as money and mobile phones.
Mrs. Agnes Akin, one of the victims, shared her harrowing experience with DAILY POST, stating, “I parked my vehicle around 4 pm alongside others from our group, and we ascended the Maitunbi Mountain for a two-hour prayer session. While there, the marauding youths arrived and vandalized my vehicle. We observed as they punctured the tires and shattered the windows, but we were cautioned against descending from the mountain out of fear for our safety.
“We witnessed them claiming the lives of two individuals, instilling fear in everyone present. Our plan was to conclude our prayers and depart the mountain by 6 pm, but due to the chaos and tension in the vicinity, I didn’t reach home until 9 pm.”
She continued, “Even on Saturday, when I returned to retrieve my vehicle, we spotted them congregating, prompting us to swiftly vacate the area.”
In a statement released by the Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, patrol teams promptly responded upon receiving information about the situation.
Confirming the arrest of six suspects, he noted that the unrest resulted in the deaths of two individuals, and efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing troublemakers.
Tension has gripped the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following the discovery of a headless body on the institution’s permanent site this past Tuesday. Targeted Attack: The University’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Agama Tangni, indicated that the attack appeared deliberate and suggested the assailants may have been monitoring the victim’s routine.

Security Response: Following the incident, the victim’s body was moved to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital mortuary, and university management was notified.

Current Status: While the Plateau State Police Command has yet to release an official statement, security personnel have been deployed to strategic areas of the campus to bolster safety and conduct an ongoing investigation to identify the killers and recover the victim’s head.

A former security guard, 22-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Phillips, has confessed to his involvement in the murder of Olakitan Ibiyola Oyesiku, a retired Ogun State broadcaster widely known as Aunty Kitan. The 67-year-old Oyesiku, who had retired from Ogun State Television, was killed along with her current security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, at her residence in Agodo village, Kobape, Abeokuta.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The investigation into the deaths was spearheaded by the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, who revealed that a crucial handwritten note found at the scene played a pivotal role in leading detectives to the suspects.
“We met her lying, facing upward to the sky, and we saw a paper, a note on her chest, and we equally found the same paper differently spread on the table in the living room,” Ojajuni stated. He further explained, “We discovered that the one that was met on her chest, the handwriting was totally different from the others that were spread.”
The use of intelligence gathering and technical tracking enabled the police to recover the deceased’s Lexus RX 330 and subsequently arrest three suspects. They were identified as Olajuwon (the former employee), 27-year-old Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, and 36-year-old Sobu Obafunsho.
A Tragic Motive: Money for Rent and Perceived Unfair Pay Upon questioning, Olajuwon provided a detailed and disturbing account of why the attack was orchestrated. He explained that a primary motive was the need for money to secure new housing for himself and Ayoola.
“My name is Sodeinde Olajuwon Phillips, and I am 22 years old. Myself, Shakirudeen and Sobu participated in the robbery and killing,” he confessed. He further elaborated, “We did it because she did not pay us well when we worked for her.”
Describing the robbery, Olajuwon recounted: “Shakirudeen and I needed more money to rent an apartment. So, we wore masks, forced the security guard to ring the bell, and after gaining entry, the security guard was taken back to his post.”
Following the attack, the group stole Oyesiku’s vehicle. Olajuwon detailed their escape, saying, “We left with her vehicle. Shakirudeen drove the car while we left together. We collected it from her before she died and drove to Onikolobo. I alighted under the bridge and went straight home, while Shakirudeen drove away with the vehicle.”
The stolen Lexus RX 330 was later recovered by the police in proximity to Olajuwon’s residence. The investigators found that the vehicle’s license plates had been removed and concealed under one of the seats.
