A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled April 19 for the hearing of a lawsuit brought by Philip Shaibu, the recently impeached Deputy Governor of Edo State. The lawsuit targets the State’s House of Assembly and other parties involved in the impeachment process……….READ ALSO

During preliminary discussions presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, the defense attorneys, led by Alex Ejesieme, SAN, appeared before the court to request a hearing date. Although the case was not initially on the day’s cause list, the defense team’s proactive approach ensured their matter was addressed.

Justice Ekwo clarified that he couldn’t proceed with a case not currently listed in the court files and instructed the lawyers to coordinate with the court registrar to secure the next available date, which was set for April 19.

The lawsuit filed by Shaibu follows his contentious impeachment, prompting legal and political debates in Edo State. In the suit, Shaibu sued the Inspector-General of Police, the State Security Service, members of the impeachment panel, the Chief Judge of Edo, and others.

He seeks a declaration that the impeachment proceedings violated his fundamental right to fair hearing, as well as an order directing respondents not to take further steps in violating his rights. Shaibu also requests the recusal of certain members of the investigating panel due to bias.

Shaibu alleges that the appointment of the panel chairman was politically motivated, aimed at weakening his gubernatorial ambition. He argues that he was never confronted with allegations before the impeachment process commenced and that due process was not followed.

The hearing of Shaibu’s lawsuit on April 19 will provide an opportunity for further deliberation on the legality of his impeachment and the fairness of the proceedings.
