According to the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Ikeaghichi faces trial on two counts of charges, which contravene Section 1 (1) (a and b) and are punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

One of the charges states, “That you, David Ikeaghichi, on or about October 31, 2023, in Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court with intent to defraud, impersonated one military personnel from Afghanistan and obtained the sum of $1,000 worth of gift card from one Dennis from Singapore, by falsely representing it to be for investment purposes, which pretence you knew to be false…”

Ikeaghichi pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, and the prosecution counsel, K. Abdulsalam, requested the court to fix a date for trial and for the defendant to be remanded in a correctional center. The defense counsel, Wilfred Ayerit, applied for bail on behalf of the defendant.

Justice Pam ordered that Ikeaghichi be remanded in Port Harcourt Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter to April 24, 2024, for the hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial.

The EFCC’s investigation uncovered Ikeaghichi’s fraudulent internet activities in the Eneka/Elumbu areas of Port Harcourt, where he specialized in impersonation, investment, and dating scams. In one instance, he posed as an Afghan military officer to his victim on Instagram, Dennis from Singapore, and obtained a $1,000 gift card from him. Further investigations revealed that Ikeaghichi sold the gift card in local currency through an online Chinese vendor.
