Federal Government Intercepts 141 Grain Trucks; Drivers Threaten Strike Over Attacks

In a bid to address the escalating food inflation and combat smuggling, the Federal Government has intercepted a total of 141 trucks attempting to smuggle grains and other staples to neighboring countries, including Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, revealed that the Customs Service, in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested around 120 trucks smuggling food items out of Nigeria in just two weeks. Additionally, the EFCC halted 21 food trucks from leaving the country on Tuesday.

While the government intensifies efforts to curtail smuggling and ensure food security, truck drivers have voiced concerns over their safety. Targeted by attacks from hoodlums, drivers have threatened to declare a strike if the situation persists. The recent incidents of looting, particularly along major roads, have further exacerbated the challenges faced by truckers.

Numerous attacks on trucks and warehouses have occurred across the country, reflecting the deepening crisis of food inflation and the cost of living. The government, acknowledging the severity of the situation, has directed the Customs Service to divert intercepted trucks to local markets to stabilize prices and alleviate food scarcity.

However, the government’s directives have not fully assuaged concerns, with truck owners warning of potential disruptions to food transportation if security measures are not strengthened. Yusuf Othman, National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), highlighted the precarious situation faced by truckers and emphasized the need for urgent action from state governments to address security lapses.

The looming threat of a strike by truck drivers underscores the urgency of the situation, as disruptions to food transportation could exacerbate the already dire food scarcity in the country. With inadequate security measures and persistent attacks on trucks, stakeholders are calling for comprehensive solutions to ensure the uninterrupted flow of essential commodities and safeguard the livelihoods of citizens.

  • According to an insider source, prison warders entered Bolarinwa’s cell while he was asleep, woke him up suddenly, and pushed him to the ground, causing him to fall.

  • Following the alleged altercation, he was rushed to the Military Hospital on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for medical attention and theatre evaluation.

  • A family source corroborated that relatives were later informed of the incident, claiming that Bolarinwa reported being severely beaten and subjected to physical abuse during a search for a mobile phone.

  • The family source also expressed deep safety concerns, alleging that this incident follows several previous attempts on his life.

Background on Conviction

Bolarinwa has been serving a prison sentence following his initial remand in April 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

  • He was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on a 13-count charge encompassing forgery, possession of false documents, and obtaining money by false pretences amounting to ₦266.5 million.

  • The EFCC stated that Bolarinwa deceived Kodef Clearing Resources Limited by posing as a military general and claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari had shortlisted him for appointment as Chief of Army Staff, extracting large sums to “facilitate” the role.

  • Investigators also recovered forged appointment letters, military identification cards, recommendations bearing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s name, and several firearms from his Alagbado residence.

  • Although he initially pleaded not guilty, Bolarinwa changed his plea to “guilty” during court proceedings on July 7, 2022.

  • Justice Taiwo convicted him on all 13 counts, sentencing him to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, ordering asset forfeitures, and directing him to pay ₦20 million in restitution.
