In response to the escalating power supply crisis across the nation, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has taken decisive action by summoning the chief executives of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company. Additionally, the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulazeez, has been called upon to address the worsening power situation that has plagued the country since the onset of the year……..CONTINUE READING

The summons comes amidst growing concerns over the persistent decline in electricity supply, attributed in part to mounting debts exceeding $1 billion owed to gas producers critical for the operation of thermal gas-fired power plants. Furthermore, incidents of vandalism targeting transmission towers have exacerbated grid instability, leading to frequent disruptions in electricity transmission nationwide.

Expressing grave concern over these developments, Minister Adelabu emphasized the urgency of addressing the challenges facing the power sector. In a directive issued through the Federal Ministry of Power, the CEOs of the affected Distribution Companies (Discos) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) have been instructed to attend a meeting in the coming week. The agenda will focus on identifying the root causes of the deteriorating power supply in their respective regions and formulating effective solutions to mitigate the crisis.

In a statement released by the minister’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu underscored the need for accountability and performance improvement within the power sector. He highlighted the government’s efforts to ramp up power generation, surpassing 4,000 megawatts in recent days despite challenges such as gas shortages and infrastructure vandalism.

The minister warned that non-compliance and underperformance by distribution companies would not be tolerated, emphasizing the possibility of severe penalties or license revocation for non-performing entities. Additionally, he directed the TCN to expedite repair works on damaged transmission infrastructure to restore power supply in affected regions promptly.

Minister Adelabu reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing power generation and distribution infrastructure nationwide, citing ongoing initiatives to expand capacity at hydro and thermal power plants. He reassured electricity consumers of imminent relief, urging patience as the government works towards resolving the crisis and improving the overall reliability of the power supply.

As Nigeria grapples with the challenges of inadequate power supply, the summoning of key stakeholders underscores the government’s determination to address the root causes of the crisis and ensure sustainable solutions for the benefit of all citizens.
