The House of Representatives Committee overseeing the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has instructed the temporary suspension of the prohibition on the sale of spirits and alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and pet bottles pending the conclusion of an investigation……..CONTINUE READING
Regina Akume, Chairperson of the House Committee on NAFDAC, revealed this decision in Abuja on Friday following a public hearing on the ban of these products held the previous week.
She stressed the necessity of adhering to proper protocols before imposing any ban, emphasizing the importance of implementing access control measures to prevent children and adolescents from accessing and consuming alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and pet bottles.
Akume reiterated the committee’s commitment to ensuring NAFDAC’s efficiency and effectiveness in fostering job creation and economic growth.
She assured to establish a fair ground between NAFDAC and manufacturers that would not compromise the safety of children or the general public.
Previously, the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted that the prohibition was implemented to safeguard the well-being and safety of children, young individuals, and other vulnerable groups.
“We made efforts to safeguard the market, hence the agreement for a five-year moratorium for manufacturers to phase out alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and pet bottles in December 2018,” Adeyeye stated.
She further clarified that the decision was not solely NAFDAC’s but a ministerial directive, and the five-year period has now lapsed.
Adeyeye expressed surprise at the manufacturers’ campaign despite the agreement to ban alcohol packaged in sachets and pet bottles.
She stressed that many issues could have been resolved earlier, clarifying that the agency does not oppose the production of alcoholic beverages but rather the packaging in sachets and pet bottles to prevent easy access by children.
