Disagreement Over Sachet Alcohol Ban: NAFDAC Vs. MAN....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a recent development, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has contradicted assertions made by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) regarding the ban on sachet alcoholic beverages…….CONTINUE READING
During a press conference in Lagos, MAN’s Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, emphasized that members of the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), a sub-sector under MAN, had expressed reservations regarding the implementation of the ban.
Contrary to NAFDAC’s claims of a collective decision, Ajayi-Kadir highlighted the objections raised by DIBAN and their participation in a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2018. This memorandum aimed to address concerns while supporting advocacy efforts for responsible alcohol consumption.
Ajayi-Kadir further argued that the ban could have adverse effects on manufacturers, workers, citizens, and the economy. He suggested that rather than imposing a ban, NAFDAC should focus on enhancing access control and implementing stricter regulations.
He emphasized the importance of moderation and responsible drinking, noting that smaller sizes promote portion control, while larger sizes may encourage excessive consumption.
Meanwhile, members of the Trade Union Congress staged protests against the ban, citing job losses and economic repercussions. The demonstrators urged reconsideration of the ban, highlighting its detrimental impact on affected businesses and employees.
The disagreement between NAFDAC and MAN underscores the complexity surrounding the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks and its implications for various stakeholders.
