In an interview with reporters in Benin, the state capital, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, stated that INEC would only recognize the results of the primary conducted by the committee appointed by the national leadership of the APC.
Onuoha emphasized that INEC would only acknowledge the exercise conducted at the venue communicated by the APC national leadership, which in the case of Edo State was Lushville Hotel and Suites.
Citing a Supreme Court decision, Onuoha explained that only the national leadership of a political party could determine the venue of a primary election, not the state leadership.
He reiterated that INEC’s role was to supervise and monitor the primaries based on the venue communicated by the party’s national leadership. Any primaries not officially communicated to INEC by the party headquarters would not be recognized by the commission.
Onuoha further warned aspirants and political parties to cease campaigning for the governorship election immediately, as the commission had yet to lift the suspension on campaigns. Campaigning is expected to resume on April 24.
The Edo APC primary held on Saturday had resulted in controversy, with three different winners announced by different factions. Despite conflicting declarations, the national leadership of the APC congratulated Dennis Idahosa, declared winner by the committee chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma.
However, the Edo State party leadership rejected the results announced by Uzodimma, insisting that only the state Returning Officer could declare the winner. Anamero Dekeri, who emerged as a third winner, also demanded recognition at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
