The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, convened the meeting in Abuja on Monday, where discussions with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) failed to avert an impending strike.

The deadlock follows a 14-day nationwide strike notice issued by the NLC and TUC on February 8, citing the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in October 2023, particularly regarding the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Hakeem Ambali, the NLC Vice President, disclosed in an interview with The PUNCH that the meeting did not persuade the unions to suspend the planned strike scheduled for February 23. He emphasized that the government had not fulfilled its commitments under the October agreement, exacerbating hardships faced by Nigerians.

Key grievances include delays in implementing agreed-upon measures, such as providing buses for transportation and paying the N35,000 minimum wage. Despite assurances from the government, Ambali stated that substantial progress has not been made, prompting the unions to uphold their ultimatum.

Moreover, Ambali highlighted the government’s failure to initiate the minimum wage committee, as mandated by law, and expressed skepticism over the committee’s recent inauguration, emphasizing the urgency of addressing labour concerns.

The NLC official clarified that while the Ministry of Labour and Employment facilitates discussions, it lacks the authority to make substantive offers, underscoring the need for meaningful engagement to resolve the impasse.

With tensions escalating and the strike deadline looming, both sides must engage constructively to mitigate further disruptions and address the pressing issues affecting workers and citizens nationwide.
