Retired football legend, Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, popularly known as Ronaldo or Ronaldo Nazario, has expressed his preference for Inter Miami’s star, Lionel Messi, to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.

This year, Messi, along with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, stands as one of the top contenders for the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

During an interview with TNT Sports, Ronaldo voiced his belief that Messi would be the rightful recipient of the award, especially after leading the Argentina national team to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Ronaldo stated, “The Ballon d’Or should go to him [Lionel Messi], without a doubt. What Messi did in the World Cup was special. It reminded me of the campaigns of Pelé and Maradona.”

In addition to his World Cup success, Messi also secured the French Super Cup and the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain before joining David Beckham’s club, Inter Miami.

It’s worth noting that the former Barcelona captain wrapped up the previous season with an impressive record of 21 goals and 20 assists in 41 matches across various competitions for PSG before making a free-agent move to Inter Miami in the summer.

The French news magazine is expected to announce the winner of the 2023 Ballon d’Or award next week.

Judgment Day Fast-Tracked! Court Grants Urgent Acceleration In Massive PDP-INEC Legal Battle!

Published

on

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Salim Ibrahim, has ordered an accelerated hearing in a lawsuit brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The litigation concerns the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Urgency of the Suit: Counsel for the plaintiffs, Chief Gordy Uche, SAN, requested an accelerated hearing because the case is time-bound. The request is driven by INEC’s revised schedule for the 2027 general elections, which includes a July ultimatum.

  • Plaintiffs’ Goal: The plaintiffs, including prominent PDP figures such as Prof. Jerry Gana and Olabode George, are seeking a court order to compel INEC to recognize the Kabir Turaki-led interim National Working Committee (NWC). They want INEC to update its official records and website to reflect this leadership, citing letters sent to the commission on May 4.

  • Basis of Claim: The plaintiffs argue that INEC is constitutionally obligated to uphold and enforce several subsisting court judgments, including decisions from the FCT High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court delivered between January 2026 and April 2026.

Procedural Complications The proceedings were marked by significant legal maneuvering and internal party conflict:

  • Representation Disputes: Confusion arose when two different senior counsel announced representation for the PDP (the 8th plaintiff). Mr. Sunday Ameh, SAN, argued he had instructions to represent the party and filed a notice for change of counsel, while also moving to strike the PDP’s name from the suit on the grounds of unauthorized action.

  • Joinder Applications: Various parties sought to join the suit, including an application from the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which includes individuals seeking to be joined as defendants.

  • INEC’s Position: The commission’s counsel, Mr. O.A. Adeyemi, confirmed receipt of the summons but stated that INEC does not intend to take a side regarding who represents the PDP, leaving that issue to the court’s discretion.

Court Ruling

  • Adjournment: Justice Ibrahim adjourned the hearing until June 30 at noon to address the pending motions for joinder, the change of counsel, and the motion to strike out the PDP as a plaintiff.

  • Judicial Warning: The judge mandated that all processes be filed and responded to promptly, warning that the court would not tolerate any delays given the urgency of the matter.
