The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, is currently in a meeting with the chairpersons of all political parties participating in the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo States.
INEC had previously set November 11 as the date for the governorship elections in these three states. Yakubu, along with prominent figures from the political parties involved, gathered at the INEC headquarters in Abuja today.
The purpose of this meeting is for the INEC Chairman to brief political parties on election preparations and the roles they will play in the upcoming elections. It also provides a platform for the parties to express their concerns and observations to the INEC Chairman ahead of the exercise.
Prominent party leaders, including Abdullahi Ganduje, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Umar Damagum, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and others, have already arrived at the meeting venue.
Meanwhile, Muritala Ajaka, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, has issued an apology following his initial claim that INEC intended to manipulate the outcome of the November 11 election in favor of a specific candidate.
In a fresh statement through his campaign spokesperson, Faruk Adejoh-Audu, Ajaka expressed his confidence in INEC’s ability to conduct a credible governorship election in Kogi.
The Kogi State chapter of SDP had raised concerns that three electoral officials were reconfiguring BVAS inside the state Government House to favor a particular candidate. However, INEC refuted these claims in a statement and called them fake news.
Subsequently, Ajaka, in a meeting with party stakeholders in Abuja on Saturday, issued an apology and reaffirmed his confidence in INEC’s election reforms. Ajaka was quoted as saying, “All our supporters should disregard any alarm about reconfiguring BVAS devices. It’s just not possible. We have total confidence in INEC’s ability to safeguard our votes.”
