An Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court in Akure has issued an order for the incarceration of Sunday Clement, a man accused of the murder of farmer Taye Alatoye. The 24-year-old laborer defendant was apprehended by the state police command following the incident and subsequently faced charges of murder in court.
The alleged crime took place as both Clement and Alatoye were en route to their farm in Ofosu community, located in the Idanre Local Government Area of the state. Witnesses reported that Clement abruptly moved backward, produced a sharpened cutlass, and fatally wounded the victim by slashing his neck, resulting in his head hanging loosely.

According to the prosecutor, Mary Adebayo, the defendant committed the crime on September 4, 2023, around 2:30 p.m. at Baba Odun Camp, Ofosu, in the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state. Adebayo cited violations of Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. II Law of Ondo State, 2006, in her case against the defendant.
Adebayo urged the court to detain the defendant at the correctional center in Olokuta, Akure, pending the outcome of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Folasade Aduroja granted the prosecutor’s request, directing the remand of the defendant in prison. She also ordered the duplication of the case file and its submission to the DPP for further guidance. The case was adjourned until November 28, 2023.
The defendant, while pleading for forgiveness, attributed his actions to the influence of hard drugs, stating, “We were both going, and we greeted each other on the path. The spirit just came over me to cut off Taye’s head. I can’t actually say what led to it. I think it was the ‘Ice’ I took in the hot sun.”

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
