Bola Akinyemi, a former foreign affairs minister of Nigeria, claimed that the United States and the United Kingdom urged him to change the country’s laws to allow same-sex marriage.

The UK and US were informed, according to Akinyemi, who worked in the Goodluck Jonathan government, that the issue of man-woman marriage was taboo in Nigeria.
He revealed that the two nations had persuaded the Nigerian government to change its course while the National Assembly was considering new legislation.
In an interview , Akinyemi stated, “I know how I was lobbied by the US and Britain when (previous President Goodluck) Jonathan was in office.

He described how “when we got that law before the National Assembly, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth came visiting.

He also asked me for advice on how to handle the problem in his meeting with President Jonathan, and I told him that was a “no-go area” for us.

We don’t appreciate having the meaning of marriage in Nigeria imposed upon us, which is why this is.
I also informed him that legalizing gay marriage will only cause the system to get more heated.

LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, and pansexual) communities are illegal under Nigerian law.
I do not support marriages between men and men or between women and women, Akinyemi declared.

“The fact that the Americans even attempt to ram marriage between men and men or between women down our throats in Nigeria is part of the reason I feel strongly about this,” he said.
