Peter Obi’s Claim That He Won The 2023 Presidential Election Is Annoying – APC Campaign Council

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has criticised the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Friday, the council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, described Obi’s assertion as annoying, arguing that the former Labour Party presidential candidate had failed to provide evidence to support his claim.

Reacting to Obi’s recent interview with the BBC, Alake said it was unacceptable for a presidential candidate to repeatedly make such claims without verifiable evidence.

He dismissed Obi’s position as unfounded and urged him to stop making statements he said were unsupported by facts.

Alake said, “Mr Peter Obi continues to demonstrate a troubling lack of character, candour, and dignity. One would expect his latest twaddle to come from overzealous supporters rather than a presidential candidate who is becoming a veteran of the race. Perhaps the master and his followers are two sides of the same rotten coin.

“Nothing is more annoying than Obi’s recent claim that he won the 2023 presidential election, while simultaneously admitting he lacks the evidence to support it.”

The APC campaign council referred to Obi’s remarks during the BBC interview, in which he reportedly said: “I don’t like going back to the past. I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election. Everything is not based on evidence.”

According to Alake, the statement demonstrated what he described as a troubling willingness to make claims without supporting documentation.

He argued that allegations concerning the outcome of an election should be backed by evidence rather than personal conviction.

“This is deeply troubling. There is simply no end to Obi’s posturing and no end to his shenanigans and farce,” Alake said.

The council further accused Obi of disregarding official records by continuing to insist that he won the 2023 presidential election.

It maintained that President Bola Tinubu emerged victorious in the poll, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner and that the election tribunal and the Supreme Court upheld the result.

“For a candidate who placed a distant third in the presidential poll to persistently insist he won — without evidence and contrary to all official records — reflects a deep and troubling disconnection from reality and absolute disregard for facts and truth,” the statement read.

The APC campaign council also criticised what it described as Obi’s tendency to exaggerate facts, arguing that such conduct was inconsistent with the responsibilities of someone seeking to lead the country.

Beyond the dispute over the 2023 election, the council alleged that Obi left financial liabilities behind during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

It challenged the NDC candidate to honour an earlier pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it was established that his administration had left liabilities in the state.

Alake said the state’s financial records had established the alleged liabilities and called on Obi to address the issue.

The statement also defended Tinubu’s administration, claiming that the President had introduced reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, expanding infrastructure, supporting businesses and young people, improving education and healthcare, and creating employment opportunities.

“At the pain of restating the factually obvious, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the 2023 election decisively. There can be no doubt about it. The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed his victory. The election tribunal and the country’s highest court affirmed it,” the council stated.

It added that Tinubu had continued to exercise the mandate conferred on him by the 2023 election.

The remarks add to the growing political exchanges between the ruling APC and opposition figures as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.
