“Political Prisoner Or Threat? Atiku’s Camp Challenges Tinubu Over El-Rufai’s Ongoing Detention”.

Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, has labeled former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai a “political prisoner of conscience” and challenged President Bola Tinubu to grant him unconditional release.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Arise Television’s News Insight, Shaibu questioned why the administration continues to hold the opposition figure if it is confident he poses no threat to Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

Legal Tangles and Extended Custody

El-Rufai was initially taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on February 18, 2026, over fraud allegations tied to his 2015–2023 tenure as governor. Since then, he has faced multiple re-arrests, remands, and charges brought by both the ICPC and the Department of State Services (DSS), ranging from corruption and contract fraud to cybercrime and phone-tapping allegations involving National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.

While Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted El-Rufai ₦100 million bail in May 2026 regarding the NSA wiretapping charge, he remains in detention due to additional legal conditions and ongoing anti-graft proceedings.

‘Impossible Bail Conditions’

Criticizing the legal process, Shaibu argued that the government has used unrealistic bail terms to keep a prominent political competitor sidelined.

“El-Rufai is a political prisoner of conscience,” Shaibu stated during the broadcast. “The courts granted him bail, but weeks have rolled into months with impossible conditions attached to his release. A man is presumed innocent until proven guilty after a fair trial.”

Addressing the presidency directly, Shaibu added:

“If you truly believe El-Rufai poses no threat to Tinubu’s electoral quest, then release him. Let him test his strength in the open, and let Nigerians decide at the ballot box. If you are so confident, why keep a political rival off the field?”
