The warning was issued by ASUU’s Bauchi Zone during a press briefing held in Bauchi on Thursday.

The union argued that the proposed policy could worsen existing challenges in the education sector and disrupt peace in universities across the country.

The Federal Government had earlier announced plans to phase out some academic programmes in public universities that it believes no longer align with Nigeria’s economic priorities.

The announcement was made on April 26, 2026, during the Renewed Hope Conversation with students of the University of Abuja.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, explained that the government intends to restructure university education to prioritise courses linked to employment, innovation, and global development trends.

He also noted that programmes deemed to have limited practical relevance would be gradually phased out.

Responding to the proposal, ASUU Bauchi Zone Coordinator, Comrade Namo Timothy, described the move as misguided and unfair to several academic disciplines.

He maintained that every university course has value to society and contributes to the development of essential skills and knowledge.

Timothy further explained that disciplines in the humanities and social sciences help develop critical thinking, communication, creativity, and analytical skills required in modern society.

He also insisted that subjects such as philosophy, religious studies, linguistics, and fine arts should not be dismissed as unproductive.

He rejected claims that graduates from these fields are responsible for unemployment and other socio-economic challenges, arguing that joblessness is a broader economic issue.

ASUU reaffirmed its opposition to the proposed policy, stating that it would resist any attempt to scrap academic programmes and is ready to collaborate with other stakeholders to stop the move.
