Captain John McGinn lifted the trophy at Besiktas Park as Villa secured their first European title since their 1982 European Cup triumph.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers powered Unai Emery’s side to victory, with the Spanish manager claiming his fifth Europa League title.
Villa’s historic win was witnessed by members of the club’s 1982 European Cup-winning squad, including former captain Dennis Mortimer and ex-striker Peter Withe, who were present to celebrate the achievement.
Tielemans opened the scoring with a spectacular volley from a well-worked corner routine, before Buendia doubled the lead with a composed curling finish, leaving Freiburg with little chance of recovery. Rogers later sealed the win with a late goal that triggered jubilant celebrations among players and fans.
Emery praised the club’s owners, supporters, and players, saying the success was a collective effort and not down to any single individual. He added that the victory was especially meaningful as it ended a long wait since the club’s last European glory in 1982.
Tielemans described the triumph as a perfect conclusion to Villa’s season, noting the team’s resilience after a difficult start and praising their turnaround under pressure.
More than 20,000 Aston Villa supporters travelled to Istanbul for the final, turning parts of the city into a sea of claret and blue, in scenes fans nicknamed “Astonbul.”
Prince William, a well-known Villa supporter, was also in attendance and celebrated the victory, congratulating the team for ending a 44-year wait for European silverware.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez revealed he played through the final despite suffering a broken finger during
