Political Storm Brews As SDP Chairman Levels Serious Allegation Against INEC.
The factional National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Sadiq Gombe, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of meddling in the internal affairs of the party, alleging that the electoral body is attempting to engineer a leadership crisis within the opposition platform.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Gombe made the allegation on Thursday, May 7, during a press briefing at the party’s national secretariat, amid the ongoing leadership dispute affecting the SDP.
The crisis stems from tensions involving the party’s former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, and his supporters, who were accused of disrupting party activities. Gabam was reportedly linked to an incident in which he and some loyalists stormed the party secretariat with alleged political thugs before security operatives intervened to restore order.
Defending recent disciplinary measures, Gombe said the suspension and expulsion of officials loyal to Gabam were carried out in line with the party’s constitution. He stated that those affected were accused of misconduct, financial irregularities, and actions considered contrary to party rules.
According to him, a five-member investigative committee headed by Air Vice Marshal Bakir Sadiq Gilmour was set up to examine the allegations. He added that all affected members were invited to appear before the panel to defend themselves, but Gabam allegedly failed to honour the invitation.
Gombe further explained that the committee sat for two weeks at the national secretariat before submitting its report, after which the National Working Committee established a white paper committee that recommended the expulsion of the individuals involved.
He also expressed concern over what he described as INEC’s involvement in the party’s internal matters, stating that the commission allegedly invited SDP leaders for an alternative dispute resolution meeting despite no officially recognised dispute being before it.
Describing the development as unexpected, he maintained that political parties are constitutionally empowered to manage their internal affairs without external interference, accusing INEC of attempting to impose leadership on the SDP.
Reaffirming the party’s stance, Gombe insisted that preparations for the SDP national convention scheduled to hold in Bauchi were ongoing and would proceed as planned despite the internal crisis.
