The KRC Genk full-back secured the accolade, ending Onyedika’s hopes of clinching the individual prize. The previous year’s winner was Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare.

The disappointment comes at a time when Onyedika is reportedly considering his future at Club Brugge after five years in Belgium, with interest from clubs such as Galatasaray and VfL Wolfsburg ahead of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile in England, Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has praised Taiwo Awoniyi after his standout performance in a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Awoniyi scored twice and also won the penalty converted by Igor Jesus, marking his 100th appearance for the club in style and earning high praise from his coach.

“He brings everything. Taiwo Awoniyi is a danger player. He is not on the list in the Europa League, but we know he will push the defensive line of the opponents,” Pereira said.

The Nigerian forward now has four goals and one assist in 14 league appearances this season. Nottingham Forest will return to European action on Thursday, facing Aston Villa in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final.
