The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other officers following the death of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed the development, adding that the affected officers will also face prosecution.

The decision followed an internal investigation into the incident, which triggered widespread public outrage on social media.

According to police accounts, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, during an operation by officers of the Effurun Area Command after intelligence suggested that Ogidi had been apprehended while attempting to send a package allegedly containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Following Ogidi’s death, ASP Usman and his team were arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where disciplinary proceedings were initiated against them.

The case was subsequently reviewed by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which examined the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the conduct of the officers involved.

Based on the committee’s findings, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved their dismissal from service. The recommendation has also been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final confirmation in line with established procedures.

Investigations revealed that the officers violated rules governing the use of firearms and acted outside approved operational guidelines. The committee therefore recommended their immediate dismissal.

The Inspector-General further stated that upon dismissal, the officers would be handed over to relevant judicial authorities to face criminal charges of unlawful homicide.

He reiterated that no police uniform grants the right to unlawfully take a life, stressing that any officer who violates this principle will face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
