FG Moves To End Strike Crisis, Meets SSANU And NASU Leadership.

The Joint Action Committee, comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Allied Institutions, received the invitation for talks with the Minister of Education in Abuja. The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to persuade the unions to suspend their industrial action and restore normal activities in federal universities. A source familiar with the development told Punch that the government is expected to present an improved offer during the discussions, as part of renewed attempts to resolve the dispute. The strike began on May 1, 2026, after both unions directed their members to withdraw services nationwide, citing prolonged delays in negotiations over allowances and welfare-related issues. Prior to the commencement of the strike, the unions had formally written to the Minister of Education, expressing frustration over stalled talks and lack of clear outcomes. They also pointed out that although an earlier circular proposing a 30 percent increase in a key allowance was withdrawn, no alternative proposal had been presented by the government. According to union leaders, members had become increasingly dissatisfied with the slow pace of negotiations and had mandated their leadership to take action if no agreement was reached by the end of April. When the deadline elapsed without any new offer, the unions proceeded with the industrial action as previously agreed. They maintained that the withdrawal of the allowance circular did not resolve the core issues under discussion, insisting that the absence of a fresh proposal left their concerns unaddressed and made the strike unavoidable.
