Guinea FA Denies AFCON Appeal Claim Over Morocco’s 1976 Title.

The Guinean Football Federation has denied claims that it filed an appeal to contest Morocco’s victory at the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The clarification comes after reports suggested Guinea had requested the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award them the 1976 title, citing an alleged walkout by Morocco during the decisive match.

The rumors gained momentum following CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title and award it to Morocco after a protest involving Senegalese players.

In a statement on Sunday, the Guinean FA called the reports “inaccurate” and “without official basis.”

“In recent days, information circulating on various media, especially social networks, has falsely suggested that Guinea sought to challenge the result of the match between the Syli National and Morocco during this competition,” the statement read.

“The Guinean Football Federation wishes to clarify, in the spirit of responsibility and reconciliation, that this information is incorrect and has no official basis.”

The federation also revisited the 1976 tournament to set the record straight.

On March 14, 1976, Guinea faced Morocco in Addis Ababa, with Zambian referee Nyirenda Chayu officiating. Chérif Souleymane gave Guinea an early lead in the 33rd minute, but Ahmed Makrouh, known as “Baba,” scored late to level the match 1-1.

That draw proved decisive. Unlike the current knockout format, the 1976 AFCON ended with a final round-robin stage. Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, and Guinea reached this stage, with the winner determined by points.

Going into the final round, only Morocco and Guinea were in contention. Guinea needed a win, while Morocco only required a draw. Makrouh’s late goal secured the draw, giving Morocco their first AFCON title.

Meanwhile, Naija News reported that CAF has updated its records to list Morocco as the 2025 AFCON champions, with Senegal as runners-up. The Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed that it has filed an urgent appeal against the decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Killings, Attacks Worsen In Nigeria — ACF Urges FG To Adopt War-Time Strategy.

Published

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has warned that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity has reached what it described as a “state of war,” urging the Federal Government to urgently prioritise security above all other national concerns.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that the warning was contained in a communiqué issued after the forum’s 38th Board of Trustees meeting held on Wednesday, April 15, and signed by its Chairman, Bashir Dalhatu.

The meeting, attended by prominent northern leaders including former government officials, diplomats, and retired security chiefs, reviewed the rising wave of violence across the country, particularly in the North.

The ACF said the security situation has evolved from isolated cases of insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes into a widespread and coordinated threat to national stability.

Recent attacks in states such as Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, and Benue, which left several people dead and displaced many others, further heightened concerns raised by the forum.

It also referenced deadly incidents in Maiduguri, including coordinated explosions that claimed multiple lives, as well as intensified attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP on military formations in Borno State.

The forum noted that several senior military officers were among those killed in recent operations, despite ongoing counter-insurgency efforts by the armed forces in key hotspots such as Sambisa Forest, Timbuktu Triangle, and the Lake Chad Basin.

ACF said the scale and persistence of the violence demand a complete shift in national priorities, stressing that insecurity should now be treated as an emergency.

It expressed concern over the humanitarian toll of the crisis, including widespread killings, mass displacement, and the destruction of communities across several states.

The group also warned that the crisis is severely affecting agriculture and the economy, particularly in northern Nigeria, where farming activities have been disrupted, leading to food shortages and rising inflation.

Calling for a “wartime approach,” the ACF urged the government to redirect resources from non-essential projects to security operations.

It also advised a broader strategy that combines stronger security action with long-term measures addressing poverty, unemployment, and education gaps, warning that neglecting root causes will worsen the crisis.

Other groups, including Afenifere, also raised concerns over rising attacks, calling for stronger collaboration among state governments and improved coordination among security agencies.

Meanwhile, security experts and retired officers urged reforms within the security architecture, including better funding, improved logistics, and stronger synergy among agencies to tackle the growing threat.
