Thugs Storm ADC Young Women Forum Meeting In Rivers, Cause Chaos.
Suspected political thugs on Friday disrupted the inaugural meeting of the ADC Young Women Forum in Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The incident occurred at Alesa Eleme, where participants had gathered for the forum’s inauguration. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers stormed the venue, dispersed attendees, and vandalised property, including canopies, loudspeakers, chairs, and other equipment.
The thugs reportedly claimed that the organisers had failed to obtain prior approval and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not authorised political activities.
Reacting to the disruption, the forum’s National Coordinator, Atosemi Oma-Uwame, condemned the attack as an attempt to stifle democratic participation.
She said, “We gathered today to inaugurate the ADC Young Women Forum in Eleme LGA. Thugs, led by a ward councillor, disrupted our meeting. The councillor claimed we did not get approval from his office, but this was not a campaign—it was a gathering of ADC young women in my constituency.”
Oma-Uwame added that the attackers warned her against linking the event to the ADC or mentioning her political party, despite prior warnings she had received about holding the event under the party’s platform.
She described the disruption as “an attempt to stifle democracy and prevent political engagement” and explained that the forum, organised in collaboration with The Atosemi Movement, aims to promote grassroots mobilisation among women.
“The forum provides a platform for young women in politics to organise and advance shared goals. It is not a feminist movement but an initiative to encourage gender balance within the party,” she said.
Oma-Uwame urged young women to actively participate in politics. “Women should not shy away from political involvement. We do not need to beg men for our rights. We encourage young women to contest for positions and engage fully in the political process,” she added.
