E-Transmission: Senate Proposal Opens Door For Electoral Errors – Ubani.

Ubani made the remarks on Saturday during an interview on Arise Television, where he argued that the proposed changes do not significantly alter the current process.

According to him, both electronic transmission and electronic transfer still involve manual collation at designated collation centres, meaning the core issues remain unresolved. He clarified that the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV) serves only as a platform for viewing uploaded results and does not compute or tabulate votes.

The senior lawyer noted that many Nigerians are uneasy with the Senate’s version of the bill because it allows for possible communication failures that could be exploited unlawfully.

He explained that if discrepancies exist between the Senate and House of Representatives versions, a harmonization committee will reconcile the differences before forwarding a unified draft to the President for assent. Ubani welcomed the fact that both chambers have passed their respective versions and confirmed that the joint committee is expected to meet to align their positions.

Referencing the 2022 Electoral Act, he said the law empowers INEC to issue guidelines prescribing the mode of result transmission. However, he maintained that the longstanding challenge in Nigeria’s electoral process lies in the gap between polling units and collation centres.

He pointed out that there have been instances where results announced at collation centres differed from those recorded at polling units, describing this as a recurring weakness in the system.
