The 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has expressed concerns over the decision by the Kano State government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to permit the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to lead a limited Sallah procession.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bayero described the approval as potentially preferential and warned it could be interpreted as an official recognition of Sanusi as Emir, despite the ongoing legal dispute over the Kano Emirate, which is still before the courts.

Nevertheless, the 15th Emir confirmed that he would comply with the state government’s directive to suspend the traditional Eid durbar, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Kano State.

The Emir’s position was communicated during a media briefing by the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba Danagundi, who said Bayero had instructed his followers to fully adhere to the government’s order, resulting in the cancellation of all preparations for the Sallah procession.

Danagundi noted that the decision to forgo the durbar was taken in the interest of public safety, affirming that the Emirate would avoid any actions that could provoke unrest. He also acknowledged the Kano State Government’s broader security considerations while reiterating concerns over Sanusi’s limited procession, which he said could be seen as tacit recognition of the 16th Emir despite the unresolved legal matter.

Earlier, Governor Yusuf had announced that Sanusi would lead the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr Durbar in the state, a decision confirmed in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, on Wednesday.

The statement explained that the move was informed by credible intelligence suggesting possible attempts by some individuals to create disturbances during the Sallah period. It also stressed that the Kano government remains committed to preserving the state’s cultural heritage while enforcing strict guidelines to maintain law and order during the festivities.

According to the statement, the Hawan Idi (Eid Durbar) will be conducted by Emir Sanusi from the Kofar Mata Eid Ground, following designated routes to Gidan Shettima and concluding at Kofar Fatalwa of the emir’s palace. Hawan Nasarawa will take place in a modified form without horseback displays, while Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi have been suspended temporarily to ensure public safety.

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
