According to reports, former Senate President and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Ahmad Lawan, has called on opposition parties to set aside partisan differences and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, stressing that national interest should take precedence over politics. Drawing from his 16-year experience in opposition politics, Lawan urged critics to acknowledge and support policies that benefit Nigerians. “Even if you don’t believe in what the ruling APC is doing, if you see us doing something for the betterment of Nigeria, please support us and give us the credit,” he said. Lawan emphasised that Nigeria is at a critical stage of development that requires cross-party collaboration to achieve meaningful progress.

Describing President Tinubu’s leadership as bold and courageous, Lawan noted that some reforms, though difficult and potentially unpopular, are necessary to reposition the country. He highlighted key security sector achievements, including the signing of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Bill, the ongoing reorganisation of the security architecture, and the approval of enhanced allowances for military personnel, stressing that these measures reflect the government’s commitment to national security and welfare of the armed forces.

On education, Lawan expressed concern about the high number of out-of-school children, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and urged privileged youths to advocate for basic education. He stressed the importance of strict implementation of the Universal Basic Education Act and the allocation of two per cent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund to improve access to education and address insecurity. Lawan also praised Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for declaring a state of emergency on education and investing in educational development, urging stakeholders to maintain unity for the state’s progress.

The City Boy Movement delegation, led by Dr. Muhammad Yakubu Hassan, highlighted their grassroots initiatives, including empowerment programmes, town hall meetings, and community projects such as “Education for All” and “Health for All,” aimed at improving local governance and addressing basic community needs.
