DR Congo Press On With World Cup Play-Of Plans Amid Nigeria Eligibility Protest.
The Democratic Republic of Congo national team has continued its preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off despite an ongoing protest lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation over player eligibility concerns.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the dispute stems from DR Congo’s dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Nigeria in the African play-off final held in November, with the NFF questioning the eligibility of certain Congolese players over an alleged improper change of nationality.
Amid the uncertainty, DR Congo have excluded Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Mario Stroeykens from their 26-man squad for the upcoming fixtures, as authorities work towards resolving the matter.
Head coach Sébastien Desabre has, however, maintained that the team remains fully focused on achieving qualification for the global tournament. He emphasized the squad’s determination, noting that their campaign has been a long and demanding journey since it began over three years ago.
The Congolese side is set to travel to Mexico, where matches will be held in Guadalajara and Monterrey as six teams battle for the final two qualification spots at the expanded 2026 World Cup.
They are scheduled to face either Jamaica or New Caledonia in the decisive play-off final on March 31 in Guadalajara, with a ticket to the tournament at stake.
Desabre expressed strong confidence ahead of the clash, insisting that his team fears no opponent and is ready to deliver a top-level performance. He added that the coaching crew has been closely monitoring both potential opponents while keeping full attention on preparing their own squad.
A win in the play-off would mark DR Congo’s return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1974.
