“Come Kneel Here!” — Court Drama As Judge Orders Sowore’s Lawyer.

Published

on

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered a lawyer representing activist Omoyele Sowore to kneel during proceedings, following a tense exchange in court.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the incident occurred during the hearing of a cyberbullying case filed against Sowore by the Department of State Services. The presiding judge issued the directive after defence counsel, Marshall Abubakar, repeatedly raised his voice while addressing the court.

At the peak of the confrontation, Justice Umar cautioned the lawyer against further disruption, warning that continued outbursts could attract contempt charges. He subsequently summoned the counsel forward and instructed him to kneel, a directive that sparked immediate reactions within the courtroom.

Several lawyers quickly intervened, appealing to the judge for leniency. The situation was eventually calmed after senior legal practitioners, including prosecuting counsel Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), urged the court to temper its stance.

The disagreement stemmed from arguments over the next hearing date after the prosecution closed its case. While the prosecution pushed for the defence to proceed, Abubakar indicated plans to file a no-case submission and requested an adjournment until July, a move strongly opposed by the prosecution, which described it as a delay tactic.

Justice Umar noted that although the prosecution handled its case promptly, the defence had taken considerable time, including spending several days cross-examining a single witness. He thereafter fixed April 13, 2026, for the adoption of final written addresses on the no-case submission.

The defence counsel, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the date, insisting it was inconvenient. Tensions escalated further when Sowore attempted to address the court from the witness box while his lawyer was still speaking, leading to a breakdown of order and prompting the judge’s stern reaction.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
