Lagos Police Boss Debunks Extortion Claims Against Task Force Operatives.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, has dismissed allegations circulating on social media claiming that operatives of the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences extort money from motorists during enforcement operations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Jimoh addressed journalists in Lagos on Monday, describing the claims as false and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the task force. He explained that the police command decided to respond after a viral video shared by an online platform appeared to show task force officials demanding money from road users.
The police chief stated that an internal investigation conducted by the Nigeria Police Force found the allegations to be unfounded. He noted that the task force has continued to play an important role in enforcing traffic and environmental regulations across the state.
Jimoh stressed that strict enforcement is necessary given Lagos’ large population, estimated at between 23 and 25 million residents. He maintained that if the agency was not effectively carrying out its responsibilities, the consequences would be evident considering the scale of daily activities within the state.
The commissioner also alleged that the viral video originated from an online platform whose owner had previously attempted to intervene on behalf of individuals arrested for traffic and sanitation offences. He explained that the footage was linked to an incident that occurred on March 13 in the Ikorodu area.
According to him, the incident began around 6:30 a.m. when task force operatives were conducting routine enforcement against motorists driving against traffic. During the operation, a driver was intercepted while attempting to make an illegal turn against the flow of traffic. In an attempt to evade arrest, the driver allegedly reversed his vehicle and collided with an oncoming commercial minibus, causing damage and putting passengers and officers at risk.
Jimoh further disclosed that the suspect resisted arrest and obstructed traffic, leading to congestion in the area. The driver was subsequently handed over to the task force for further investigation, while the damaged bus was towed to the agency’s office in Oshodi. He also claimed that the suspect attempted to incite bystanders against enforcement officers, resulting in the throwing of stones and other objects at security personnel.
The commissioner explained that the viral video was recorded by the suspect while he was being transported from the scene and did not reflect the full sequence of events. He described the footage as misleading and deliberately shared to create a false impression of what transpired.
Jimoh revealed that the driver was later arraigned in court on four counts and granted bail but was remanded in custody after failing to meet the bail conditions. He emphasized that decisions regarding detention are determined by the courts and not the police. The police chief also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and cooperate with enforcement authorities, warning the public against spreading misleading information capable of undermining the work of security agencies.
