IBEDC Blames National Grid Crisis As Power Outages Worsen.

Published

on

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has said the power challenges currently affecting customers are largely due to low electricity generation and unstable supply from Nigeria’s national grid.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to the company, the situation has significantly reduced the amount of electricity available for distribution to consumers.

Residents in several communities within IBEDC’s franchise areas have recently complained about worsening electricity shortages, a situation that has already triggered protests in some locations. Youths in Osogbo staged a protest on Wednesday at the company’s regional office in the city.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan, IBEDC acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the supply challenges and apologised to customers whose homes and businesses have been affected.

The company explained that shortages in gas supply to power generation plants have drastically reduced electricity production nationwide, forcing distribution companies to increase load shedding across their networks.

IBEDC also noted that electricity demand in its coverage areas has surged in recent months, particularly after the introduction of additional Band A feeders in line with regulatory directives.

Despite the rising demand, the electricity allocated to the company from the national grid has remained unstable and has occasionally declined, widening the gap between supply and consumption needs.

“As a result of these constraints, some communities within our franchise are experiencing supply shortages. We fully understand the frustration this has caused among our customers and sincerely apologise for the disruption to homes, businesses and economic activities,” the company said.

IBEDC added that the power crisis has already sparked demonstrations in some communities, while others are considering similar protests over the prolonged outages.

“The current supply challenges have understandably triggered protests in some communities within our franchise, with others threatening to demonstrate,” the statement added.

The company, however, appealed to residents and community leaders to choose dialogue instead of confrontation, noting that it has continued to engage stakeholders across its service areas while collaborating with key players in the electricity sector to stabilise the grid and improve supply.

FERMA’s South-East 2 Zonal Director, Suleiman Mohammed Omonowo, issued the warning during an inspection of the project, cautioning against the burning of tyres during celebrations, which he said could damage the road surface.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.
