“With total submission to the will of the Almighty God, we announce with heavy hearts the transition to eternal rest of our father and brother, the legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Prince Peter ‘Dodo Mayana’ Rufai.

“He passed away peacefully at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2025, following a short illness. He was 61 years old.”

While grappling with the suddenness of his death, the family expressed deep gratitude for his life—one marked by distinction, patriotism, and enduring inspiration.

“Though his passing came as a shock, we remain thankful to God for the exceptional and impactful life he lived—a life that elevated him to global fame through a brilliant football career,” the statement read.

The family highlighted his remarkable football journey, beginning in the late 1970s with Sharks Football Club in Port Harcourt, culminating in his historic role as Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goalkeeper. He proudly represented Nigeria at the USA ’94 and France ’98 tournaments and played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ triumphant 1994 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Tunisia.

“From humble beginnings in Port Harcourt, Prince Peter Rufai rose to become Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goalkeeper, featuring in USA ’94 and France ’98, as well as four AFCON finals. He earned 66 caps for the national team and even scored a goal—an uncommon feat for a goalkeeper.”

Rufai also enjoyed a storied club career across several countries, including Benin Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, where he earned widespread admiration.

“His club career spanned multiple continents, making him a household name across Europe and Africa.”

Following his retirement, Rufai returned to Nigeria to devote himself to youth development through his initiative, Staruf Sports Development Limited, which focused on nurturing young talents and promoting grassroots sports.

“After hanging up his gloves, he came back home and founded Staruf Sports Development Limited, dedicating his time and energy to empowering young athletes across the country.”

The family acknowledged the overwhelming wave of condolences and tributes pouring in from Nigerians and the international football community since news of his passing was made public.

“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, as well as from the global football community. Your prayers, messages, and kind words have been a great comfort during this difficult time.”

A formal announcement regarding funeral arrangements will be made soon, the statement concluded.
