Senegal Fans Rally In Dakar Against Imprisonment Of 18 Supporters In Morocco Following AFCON Final [Photos].
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Dakar on Saturday, calling for the release of 18 Senegalese fans jailed in Rabat following disturbances at the January Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Carrying flags and placards, the demonstrators marched through Senegal’s capital, chanting “Free the hostages,” AFP reporters at the scene said. The protest was in response to prison sentences issued by a Moroccan court earlier this month.
The 18 supporters were convicted of hooliganism on February 19, receiving jail terms ranging from three months to one year.
Tensions erupted late in the final when Morocco was awarded a penalty, prompting some Senegalese fans to clash with security as they attempted to reach the pitch.
Nine of the convicted were sentenced to a year in prison and fined 460 euros (around 544 dollars) each.
Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, described the sentences as excessive in parliament, saying Morocco’s handling of the case “does not honour” bilateral relations. He added that Senegal was taking “all necessary steps” to secure the release of its nationals.
On the field, Senegal went on to win the AFCON title 1-0 after extra time, with Morocco’s Brahim Díaz missing the decisive penalty in a dramatic finale.
