Now We Lost All Our Lawmakers – Former LP Organising Secretary Laments Party’s Collapse.
Former National Organising Secretary (NOS) of the Labour Party (LP), Clement Ojukwu, has expressed concern over the negative impact of court cases filed against the party since the 2023 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Ojukwu lamented that the series of legal battles has significantly weakened the party’s political standing. He recalled that after the 2023 polls, the LP had elected 34 members to the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members to state Houses of Assembly.
“Now we’ve lost all of them. I don’t think we even have five members left in the National Assembly,” he said.
Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, said he chose to work with the officially recognised leadership to help rebuild the party.
“I joined the caretaker committee to save the Labour Party and strengthen it for the future. I also call on my colleagues at all levels—national, state, and local—to come together and help restore our party. Another election is approaching, and we’ve lost much of what we had. Many members have moved to other parties, so it’s time to unite and rebuild,” he said.
He noted that the caretaker committee has established a reconciliation committee to bring members together.
“There are no longer factions within the Labour Party. A court ruling has confirmed that the right people are in the correct positions,” Ojukwu added.
He urged Julius Abure and others to drop ongoing legal cases, stressing that litigation is harming the party. “Legal battles have destroyed many political parties, and the Labour Party is losing support every day. It’s saddening to see,” he said.
Ojukwu dismissed suggestions that joining Senator Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure faction. He described himself as “the oxygen of that particular group” and said, “I’m with this leadership because of the court verdict. I have not betrayed anyone; rather, I was betrayed.”
