The Nigerian Senate has raised concerns over the fees charged by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), questioning whether they are affordable for millions of prospective students nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The issue came up during a budget defence session, where lawmakers examined JAMB’s financial projections and operational plans. Senators noted that the current Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) fee of about ₦3,500 remains a significant burden for many families already struggling with economic challenges.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, Mr. Amos Yohanna, urged JAMB to consider further reducing the fee to ensure equity and wider access to education. He emphasized that accessibility and fairness should be central to the board’s operations, particularly as households contend with rising living costs.

Beyond fees, the Senate highlighted operational challenges affecting candidates, such as technical glitches during registration and examinations. Lawmakers also criticized the limited number of computer-based test (CBT) centres in some areas, especially rural communities, which forces candidates to travel long distances to take the exams.

The upper chamber also reviewed JAMB’s projected revenue, including plans to generate approximately ₦23.8 billion internally in 2026. Senators called for greater transparency and accountability, insisting that revenue generation should not come at the expense of students and their families.

In response, JAMB officials noted that the UTME fee had already been reduced from ₦5,000 to ₦3,500 in recent years. They added that efforts are ongoing to expand CBT centres nationwide and improve the examination process to make it more efficient and inclusive.

Despite this, the Senate maintained that further reforms are needed to reduce financial pressure on candidates while strengthening the efficiency and credibility of Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system.

The discussion reflects growing concerns about access to higher education amid economic challenges, with stakeholders urging policies that balance cost recovery with social responsibility.
